Mets Fall 3-1, Drop Opening Series to Marlins

Game 3: Florida Marlins 3 @ New York Mets 1

Jonathon Niese wasn’t bad Thursday but on a night when the New York Mets couldn’t muster any offense, he needed to be better. In six innings of work, Niese gave up three earned runs on eight hits and two walks. Most frustratingly, he gave up two runs right after the Mets had come back to tie the game at one in the bottom of the fourth.

The Mets offense was poor to say the least, mustering just seven hits, with only one going for extra bases. Meanwhile, Marlins pitchers walked no one, a stark contrast from Wednesday’s game.

Jeff Francoeur recorded two hits, knocking in the Mets only run with his fourth-inning double. Angel Pagan recorded two hits as well in his first start of the season, but other than that the New York bats were cold, as the rest of the Mets hitters combined to go 3 for 26.

The Mets did have a good game from the bullpen, as four Met relievers combined to throw three shutout innings, including a nice comeback performance from Hisanori Takahashi, who pitched a scoreless eighth.

The Mets look to turn their homestand this weekend, as the Washington Nationals come to town to play three. The Mets will start Mike Pelfrey on Friday against Washington’s Garrett Mock.
